Abstract

Abstract The spark counter used by us in a previous work as a fast electrical pulse generator for testing fast coincidence circuits is very useful also as a light pulser utilising the spark as a source of light; the electrical pulse generated at the same time as the light pulse can be taken as a time reference for it. Transit-time measurements of some multiplier phototubes using the above light pulses and the electrical pulses have been carried out by a coincidence method, instead of the conventional method of fast oscilloscopes. The transit time for the RCA-5819 and RCA-IP21 is estimated to be (19.5±0.3)ns and (16.8±0.3)ns respectively.
