Abstract

This research is based on the results of a pilot study that revealed the importance of the monster, as a character for children aged 5 to 6 years. It focuses on the analysis of this recurring archetypal figure that is produced as a contemporary visual cultural figure. For this purpose the methodology is divided into two distinct stages: The first analytically stage aims to delve into the meanings given to this figure over the last decades. The second empirical stage uses the children’s drawings, the unstructured interview and the cultural semiotics to discover how children interpret the role of this character in the stories or narratives. The result is a classification of basic categories, which may be the most important variants for this character. Then comparing these defined types with the drawings of 41 children of Childhood Education of the city of Granada. Based on these comparisons it becomes clear that not only is the monster a cultural symbol within the audio-visual field of particular children, but also that children so young are perfectly capable of assimilating the different roles it plays within a visual production and in auditory narratives.
