Abstract
Since the mid-twentieth century, orthopaedic and skeletal trauma surgery in Spain has become an increasingly specialised field, clearly differentiated from general surgery, and has reached an excellent technical level. This process of specialisation continues apace, and treatment for orthopedic trauma injury is now functionally separate from that for other orthopaedic patients, following a process similar to that observed in other medical areas such as vascular radiology, infectology and geriatrics.
