Abstract

Tourism in Spain is of great importance in its impact on production and employment; this paper focuses on these economic variables to construct an indicator of productivity. The hospitality sector is taken as the reference activity due to a lack of specific data for tourism. Details of tourism behavior patterns during the last decades have been analyzed regarding regional differences and similarities in order to create their productivity indicator, producing a development regional panorama. During the period of study, Spain has become a world tourism power and should now face the various challenges arising from a changing situation in a global and competitive economic world framework.
