Abstract

Pomponne, at The Hague, was not directly involved in the French efforts to win England and Sweden away from the Triple Alliance. Yet, as the representative of France at the hub point of the league, he had to note the responses there to the maneuvers conceived and directed by Lionne. As for the foreign minister, he looked to Pomponne perhaps more than to any other French diplomat for help in evaluating the changing events and in judging what should be done. Pomponne was a model of ambassadorial competence and sagacity; he was also a personal and intimate friend without hidden motives, who gladly followed his advice to the letter.1
