Abstract
The world's largest single optical telescope has been officially opened on the Spanish island of La Palma in the Canaries. The Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) has a diameter of 10.4m and consists of 36 individual hexagonal segments 1.9 m in size. The GTC is bigger than both the twin Keck telescopes in Hawaii and the Hubble Space Telescope, which are 10 m and 2.4 m in diameter, respectively.
