Abstract

With the accession of the Federal Republic of Germany, NATO became the institution through which German security would be defined and managed, as well as the principal organisation by which the East-West military balance in Europe was to be maintained. When the Federal Republic became a member, NATO took on the role of maintaining the military–political balance between its own members, as well as between East and West. In other words, the Alliance had taken on an important non-Cold War agenda.KeywordsEuropean SecurityBilateral RelationshipDomestic RegimeAlliance MemberBilateral TreatyThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
