Abstract

AbstractAfter a brief introduction on life histories in Latin America, the article summarizes the life history of Nicolas Ciria (1891–1989), a Spanish immigrant to Argentina. Nicolas Ciria recollects his childhood in rural Spain, his landmark decision to emigrate to Argentina in 1918, and his life in Buenos Aires. His major emphasis is on work in a perfume factory-shop, family life centred on his wife and son, the Spanish ingroups and cultural events, and a constant nostalgia for things Spanish. After he retires during the 1950s, he acknowledges a significant change in his life, a radicalization of his basically conservative ideology. This is related by Nicolas Ciria to the close relationship he has with his son, who moved to Canada in 1969 and made frequent trips to Argentina to be with the father. A summary conclusion suggests a possible relevance of Nicolas Ciria's life history for historians and social scientists, while underscoring certain specific features of this text.
