Abstract

The necessary and sufficient conditions for a spacetime to admit a two-dimensional group of isometries acting on non-null orbits are given in the context of the compacted spin coefficient formalism. Some theorems concerning the Gaussian curvature and orthogonal transitivity of the group orbits, the Petrov types of the relevant spacetimes and the hypersurface orthogonality of the Killing vectors are presented.
