Abstract

This paper proposes a novel coding scheme to Visible Light Communications (VLC) systems by using color diversity in addition to the expected diversity gains. This scheme alleviates the impact of monochromatic degradation of the visible light channel while still providing the regular space and time diversity gains. This scheme can be used in a single-input and single-output (SISO) system as well as in multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) systems and can be expanded to higher order color shift keying (CSK) modulations. Simulations were made to compare the performance of the proposed scheme to the traditional QuadLED (QLED) CSK system without any coding for SISO and MIMO systems. The results show that gains of up to 13dB can be achieved by this coding scheme under strong monochromatic channel degradation.
