Abstract

AbstractBuilding upon the idea of space as a collection of points, we study a special space used in relativity, called spacetime . The points of this space are physical events. Starting with the definition of an event, we will discuss how the relations between different events, such as time interval and distance, are measured. The measurements of times and distances lead to the notion of the frame of reference, which serves as a coordinate system in spacetime. We will discuss how to represent spacetime and events graphically using spacetime diagrams. This will further the geometrical approach to the theory of relativity.KeywordsEventObserverReference frameClockTime measurementsAtomic clockDistance measurementsRadar methodSpacetime diagrams
