Spacecraft operate in a harsh environment that inflicts a thermal gradient of several hundred degrees between the sunlit and shadowed sides of the vehicle. In the absence of a conductive or convective medium, the challenge in spacecraft thermal design is to achieve an internal environment that approximates to 'room temperature'.
