Abstract

The paper considers how the role of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) design should be carried out, within a concurrent engineering environment, throughout the design, manufacturing and test cycles of a typical spacecraft project. Key EMC activities and performance indicators are identified, starting from the initial definition phase through to the detailed design, manufacturing and test phases. Suitable metrics for rating EMC design and performance are discussed along with things to do and things to avoid, to achieve the required quality, cost, performance and schedule goals. The paper gives examples of typical EMC problems from the past which occurred due to poor or lack of concurrent engineering design. (7 pages)
