Abstract

Infrared effects in QED are discussed from the point of view of space-like infinity. Using the properties of spin and conformally weighted functions defined on a null cone, an elementary proof of the infrared coherence condition is given and it is shown that Lorentz symmetry is spontaneously broken on all charged superselection sectors. The implications of these results for quantum gravity are discussed.
