Abstract

Part of the vibrational spectrum of the 265 fs lived S 1 state of β-carotene is reported. The lifetime of this state is determined from (a) lifetime broadening of Raman bands of vibrational modes in S 1 as compared to those in S 0 and (b) from the laser-intensity-dependent transmission studies of the sample. Space- and time-resolved spectroscopic techniques - unique to pulsed Raman spectroscopy - have been employed to assign the excited-state spectrum.
