Abstract
This year's theme is Reimagining Geriatric Mental Health: Innovations to promote the well-being of patients and caregivers. It is important to think outside the box as a geriatric psychiatrist, using multi-disciplinary teams and innovative strategies to address our patients' needs. In this talk, husband and wife team Algis Kalvaitis (healthcare architect) and Dr. Kristina Zdanys (geriatric psychiatrist) will describe ways in which living spaces can be designed for older adults with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. The format will be "call and response" in which Dr. Zdanys will present clinical challenges seen among patients with dementia, and Mr. Kalvaitis will offer design recommendations to ameliorate those symptoms. Neuropsychiatric symptoms presented will include depression, sleep disturbance, apathy, wandering, hygiene challenges, and safety. A history of care facilities will be reviewed. Architectural case studies of successful dementia care facilities will be presented. Q&A will be offered.
