Abstract
Summary With respect to the Middle European meadow vegetation Centaurea scabiosa - Knautia arvensis meadows are composed of plant species spread mainly in the following communities of plants: Molinio-Arrhenatheretea, Arrhenatheretalia, Arrhenatherion, Triseto-Polygonion, Festuco-Brometea, Sedo-Scleranthetea, Origanetalia and Nardetalia. Besides the typical variant this vegetation type has two other variants: the Galium album -variant and the Potentilla erecta -variant. With the help of E llenberg's factor indices (1973 and 1979) the authors give an ecological characterization of the association and its three variants as for light, temperature, and moisture factors, acidity and nutrient content of soil. A phytogeographical characterization of the investigated vegetation types was performed with the help of the continentality values (Ellenberg 1973 and 1979). As the intensive cultivation of grassland causes a strong uniformation of the grass vegetation in southern Norway, their most important ecosystems and ecocomplexes should be preserved and protected. The half-natural meadow vegetation is an essential part of cultural landscape and a component of its recreation value. It is a natural heritage influenced by man. It is a gene pool of great worth for grass cutlivation and an important object for synecological, syngenetical and syntaxonomical research.
