Abstract

NUMEROUS reports on the feeding of poultry rations containing high levels of soybean oil meal indicate that such rations should contain some protein of animal origin. Information summarized by Almquist (1943) indicated that protein from animal source should constitute 5 to 10 percent of the protein in all-mash starting rations for chickens in which soybean meal is the principal protein supplement. Most of the evidence cited was concerned with the use of proteins derived largely from fish and milk products. Heuser and Norris (1944) Showed that to obtain optimum growth and feed efficiency for chicks up to eight weeks of age, rations containing large quantities of soybean oil meal should contain a minimum of 2 to 3 percent of animal protein concentrates, such as fish meal, meat scrap or dried skim milk. Wilgus and Zander (1945) reported that soybean oil meal was not satisfactory as a sole protein supplement for .
