Abstract

ABSTRACT FUEL spray characteristics of soybean oil and its blend with diesel fuel were studied experimentally and correlated with the performance of a direct injection type diesel engine. The differences in the physical properties of the fuels appeared to be the major factors in the variations in fuel spray characteristics. The physical properties were found to control spray atomization, injection parameters and the spray plume geometry. These characteristics, in turn, influenced the engine performance with respect to power output, emissions and thermal efficiency.
