Abstract

MUCH has been said in the U.S. about the U.S.S.R.'s emphasis on science information services. Reported accomplishments have been held up as examples to the U.S. So to get first-hand knowledge of this work, five representatives of the U.S.'s National Federation of Science Abstracting and Indexing Services (in which the Chemical Abstracts Service participates) went to Moscow Oct. 22-27 last year. At the All-Union Institute of Scientific and Technical Information (VINITI), Prof. A. I. Mikhailov, VINITI's director, and his staff arranged a very thorough inspection of the VINITI operations and participated in uninhibited discussion sessions in a most kindly and friendly atmosphere. The U.S. group's conclusion from the visit: a sound confirmation of Soviet emphasis on information services. The U.S.S.R. today strongly recognizes centralized science information work; personnel are numerous, responsibilities are highly rated, and financial support is virtually unlimited.
