Abstract

Purchases by the USSR of large quantities of grain from the USA in 1972/1973 had a marked effect on world supplies and prices, and showed the international significance of USSR import policies. In this article Professor Nove provides a personal assessment of the Soviet grain situation and describes the historical background. He points to the most important variables which will affect future development.
