Abstract

Siberian natural gas now is being piped to France, according to Gaz de France, the country's national utility. Deliveries likely will amount to 35 billion cu ft this year. There is no way of verifying whether the gas indeed has its origin in the Yamal peninsula area, site of a massive natural gas deposit being developed by the Soviet Union. The Soviets claim it does, honoring a 1982 contract signed with the French which calls for their purchase of up to 282 billion cu ft annually over a 25-year period beginning Jan. 1. The pipeline itself has been the focus of world attention since it first was proposed some years ago. If, as is being said, the line is in operation, it represents a significant technical achievement. Portions of its 3600- mile length traverse difficult terrain.
