Abstract

The luminosity distribution, isophotes, integrated photographic magnitudes, e otive diameters, and other photometric parameters are derived for the large southern spiral galaxy 300, type SA(s)cd, photographed with the Mount Stromlo 30- and 744nch reflectors The total apparent magnitude m = 8 66 (with provisional xero point) and maximum diameter 2a = 30' (at the threshold M = 28 0 mag. = 0.5 0/pc2) correspond to MT = -17.94 and D = 165 kpc if ,n - M = 266 and A = 1.9 Mpc The major axis is in position angle 0 = 109 , and the mean axis ratio q = (b/a) = 0 75 corresponds to an inclination j = 42?5. The effective equivalent radius is r = 4'42 = 2 45 kpc; the effective surface brightness is = 23 52 mag. = 31 0/pc2 and the mean luminosity gradient of the exponential component contributing 82 per cent of the total luminosity is G(a) = -014 = - 0 255 . In conjunction with Epstein's 21-cm observations at Harvard, giving a total mass = 2 1 X 1010 0 and a neutral hydrogen mass H I = 2.0 X 10 0, the apparent mass4uminosity, hydrogen-luminosity, and hydrogen-mass ratios areJ = / = 9.0, g = H i/ = 0.86, and h = H i/ = 0095. A comparison is made with the corresponding parameters of the Large Magellanic Cloud and of M33.
