Abstract

Our survey of the media in 14 countries of South Asia resulted in the lowest score of any region (around 150 items from 188 sources, with half of them sources returning zero items). Almost half of the sample fell into the neutral frame, with most of the others being categorized into the explicitly ‘good’ Anthropocene. Media in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the Philippines made up over 80% of the total, providing many high-quality items, some home-grown – this was also the case for other, smaller country results, notably Bhutan where the single article compares the Anthropocene and Kali Yuga (Hindu ‘Dark Age’). We found very few items on the Anthropocene outside the English-language media. This chapter attempts to explain these patterns with reference to postcolonial arguments evident from some of the articles, specifically referencing the work of Dipesh Chakrabarty and Amitav Ghosh. Malaysian media also reported these debates.
