Abstract

ABSTRACT In South Asia, the combination of political and economic concerns, lack of trained manpower, and inadequate infrastructure have led to insufficient networking and minimal sharing of information within and between the countries of India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh as well as the smaller nations of Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives. Mainly in India have library and information specialists begun to make the necessary steps to implement the concept of resource sharing, via networking, in this region of the world. This paper explores the challenges facing these countries in becoming part of the “electronic global village” and presents possible solutions to overcoming the perceived information crisis in this part of the world. South Asian library and information professionals must face multiple challenges and work to lessen the information gap between the developed countries and the developing nations of South Asia.
