Abstract

This article reports on the demonstration of AIDS activists against the decision of the government not to provide free antiretroviral drugs to pregnant mothers with HIV. The Treatment Action Campaign considered the delay of nevirapine or zidovudine treatment as immoral uneconomical and unlawful. In the opening statement of President Thabo Mbeki he re-stated the governments commitment to fight against the disease. On the other hand the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) was criticized for not fairly representing the AIDS community. Furthermore HIV/AIDS experts and activists criticized SANAC governing body because it favors nongovernmental organization (NGO) sectors represented by unknown American national instead of South Africas top experts and HIV/AIDS NGOs. Furthermore two members of SANAC were appointed to represent traditional healers but there is no one to represent doctors and health care professionals. Due to this problem the Health Minister Mantho Tshabalala-Msimang said that scientific experts and representatives from AIDS NGO would be nominated into technical task teams to advise SANAC.
