Abstract

A new series of anticancer agents are being investigated in the US following the isolation of combretastatin compounds from the South African Combretum caffrum tree. Synthetic analogues of combretastatin have shown significant cytotoxic activity in preliminary studies, and hopes are high for their clinical development as therapy for breast and ovarian cancer.
