Impact on People's Health The impact of the war on the health of the Mozambican people has been disastrous. Measured most crudely, the war has caused an increase in death rates. UNICEF gives a conservative estimate of a child mortality rate of 325/1000, and calculates that between 1981 and 1986 the war caused over 320,000 infant and child deaths. A series of studies among displaced people between 1983 and 1987 have shown overall mortality rates of between 60 and 139 per 1000 per year, 3-6 times higher
