Abstract

The pressures to which the Press in South Africa is subjected are, according to the author, comprehensive. Examples of these pressures are: pressure by a Government which increasingly appropriates powers to exert control over reporting as well as the unfair competition from the state-controlled South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). The Afrikaans newspapers, established to support the ideal of Afrikaner self-realisation, are also particularly susceptible to direct or indirect pressure from readers. They serve a community split by unprecedented discord and dissension. According to the author the Afrikaans newspaper must continue to strive for the greatest measure of political and social justice and also for the biggest coalition of moderates, also across colour lines.
