Abstract

Control engineering education is provided to students in South Africa at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, starting with elementary courses at the third or fourth year of bachelor's degree programs. Master's degree courses are given on diverse subjects that reflect both the needs of local industry and the academic interests of departmental staff. The article outlines the options available at various universities. With the advances made in applicable control theory the master's degree is regarded as the minimum level of education needed to produce an effective control engineer. Ph.D. degree programs are available for students wishing to contribute to the development of control engineering knowledge.
