Abstract

«Sourd comme un pot acoustique ?» An example of pottery in Medieval masonry in Strasbourg. For over a century, pottery inserted in the masonry of religious buildings in Medieval Europe has generally been considered as having an acoustic function. More recently, the development of the archaeological study of standing buildings shows that this method was also used in non religious contexts, and that the acoustic hypothesis is certainly not the only interpretation possible. The Strasbourg finds provide the opportunity to reconsider the question through an archaeological and chronological analysis of the architectural and ceramic data.
