Abstract

Abstract Bhutan is a small Himalayan kingdom with nearly 0.8 million population. Being one of the poorest nations in the world, Bhutan has achieved a significant economic progress in recent years. Export of hydropower contributes most of its foreign exchange (over 85%). It has one of the largest hydropower potentials in the world. Only 5% of the total hydropower potential is currently being utilized. The government of Bhutan has developed a master plan to tap this green energy resource to generate power not only for domestic use but also for export to surrounding countries. One of the primary aims of this paper is to study Bhutan's current and future hydropower projects and examine the potential of a collaboration framework for energy trading. The impact of such a regional energy trading on Bhutanese economy will also be analyzed.
