Abstract

U.S. government publishing on Soviet affairs constitutes an important contribution to the literature on the Soviet Union. This article provides an overview of the history of government research in this field and explores the relationship between government and academic research efforts. The government's current publishing program is described, with particular emphasis on unclassified literature produced by the foreign affairs and intelligence agencies. Finally, the article discusses the problems of access to and dissemination of this important source material.
