Abstract

Library collections contain items that will be required by readers in the future. These materials, all of which present difficult preservation problems, are found in formats as varied as papyrus and computer tape. Only recently have we come to realize that the deterioration of these resources is a significant threat. This article considers the literature on library and archives conservation and suggests some points of departure for librarians beginning a journey into the area of library preservation.
