Abstract

Abstract Examples of sound symbolism from preceding chapters have consisted of isolated utterances. This chapter illustrates sound-symbolic communication in a sustained stretch of discourse. I will adapt the sociolinguistic concept of “involvement” to an examination of the multiple functions of sound symbolism in a narrative of personal experience. I will argue that sound-symbolic utterances are used by the Pastaza Quechua to create a particular kind of interlocutionary involvement. Quechua speakers’ sound symbolic performances present perceptual images that enhance an understanding of and involvement in a communicative interaction.
