Abstract

Inelastic neutron scattering spectra of the strong glassformer B 2O 3 show the existence of a crossover temperature T c for the glass forming liquid, above which the fast dynamics becomes nearly temperature independent. In that interpretation one is forced to conclude that the crossover temperature is above the melting point ( T m = 725 K) in this substance. We have been able to unravel the eigenvectors of the motion from the Q dependence of the spectra. The comparison with the Debye expectation supports an interpretation of the boson peak as a crossover in the dynamics from sound waves to different kind of vibrations, possibly localized ones.
