Abstract

Transmission loss measurements of thin, rectangular aluminum plates employing the (0.1) acoustic mode of a wave guide are described. Theoretical transmission loss formulas are derived for the limiting cases of small and large ratios of plate span to plate thickness. In the case of large ratios, a “mass law” formulation is obtained which exhibits an angular dependence characteristic of the (0.1) mode. Almost complete sound transmission predicted for angles of incidence near grazing is verified experimentally for all plates studied. Some discrepancies between theory and experiment for small ratios are discussed and an attempt is made to empirically correct the calculations. These discrepancies are here attributed to imprefect boundary clamping and internal plate dissipation.
