Abstract
Understanding the mechanisms involved in maintaining species integrity is central to the study of systematics and evolution, and is especially interesting in recently evolved species where isolation is incomplete and still in the process of forming. Thus, natural hybridization is relatively frequent in these groups. The genus Lepomis (sunfish) is such a group and has been noted for the occurrence of natural hybrids (Hubbs, 1920; Hubbs, 1955).
