Sound Doubling In The First Conversion (6)Chords Used In Classical Harmony Education

Abstract

In this study, a research has been done about which sound should be doubled in “first conversion 6 chords which take place in 21 source books that are used at the Harmony Education courses at higher education institutions like Faculty of Education Department of Fine Arts Education Program of Music Teaching, Faculty of Fine Arts Department of Music and Music related departments at State Conservatoires. It consists of the years between 1600 and 1900 and it is described as “Classical Harmony” today. Hence the Harmony Education books written by national and international theorists and writers have been examined and we have tried to investigate which sound is doubled at each degree of first conversion 6 chords of all major and minor scales. It has been found out that although many theorists and composers double the same sound at the same degree, there also are some theorists and composers who double different sounds of 6 chords at the different locations of the same degrees and who state that different chord sounds should be doubled at different degrees according to the location of the chord.
