Abstract

Purpose - The primary purpose of the research is to determine the importance degrees of the components according to the European Union countries within the scope of the values of the components that make up the Social Progress Index (SPI) of the European Union countries for 2020. The second aim of the research is to measure the social development performance of countries. Finally, the third aim of the research is to evaluate the extent to which the social development performance of countries can be explained by the Entropy-based MAUT method within the scope of the SPI values of the countries. Design/methodology/approach - Significance levels of SPI components according to European Union countries Entropy, social development performances of countries, Entropy-based MAUT, and to what extent countries' social development performances can be explained by Entropy-based MAUT method within the scope of SPI are explained with Pearson correlation coefficient methods. Findings - It has been determined that the top three SPI components for the countries are respectively INC (Inclusion), HEA (Health) and AAE (Access to Advanced Education), and the top three countries with the highest social development performance are respectively Greece, Sweden and Finland. In addition, it was observed that the social development performances of the countries in general were high. Apart from these, it has been concluded that the social development performances of the countries within the scope of the SPI values of the countries can be explained in general terms according to the Entropy Based MAUT method. Discussion - The comprehensive and detailed determination of the social development performances of the countries will raise the awareness of the countries about their own and each other's social development performances. Therefore, thanks to this awareness, countries will be able to make their activities more meaningful and efficient in determining and improving their social policies. Accordingly, European Union countries can increase their social development performances by giving importance and priority to the INC, HEA and AEE components. In terms of method, the social development performances of countries can be measured with more multi-criteria decision making methods, and the consistency and inconsistency between the values determined within the scope of the methods can be discussed.
