ISBN 978-1-338-14901-2 $5.99 Reviewed from galleys R Gr. 7-10 Years ago Janelle and Alyssa were best friends, but when Janelle revealed Alyssa’s diabetes to her boyfriend, Alyssa couldn’t forgive the betrayal. Now they’re seniors in high school, and their conflicts are philosophical as well as personal: popular Alyssa is all about fame through marketing, while community-focused Janelle wants to believe that people should be willing to do good without counting the cost. When Alyssa’s kidneys fail, Janelle considers donating a kidney to her, and she must consider both her motivations and the steep cost of helping. Peppering Janelle’s narrative voice with lively idioms and snarky humor, Reed has created a diverse cast that enables significant issues, such as the racial politics of organ donation (African-American Janelle receives some criticism for donating to a white girl) and the tensions that arise in a socioeconomically and racially mixed neighborhood, to arise naturally through her plotting. The relationship between Janelle and her longtime crush Mateo deploys all the classic romance tropes, from early tension [End Page 218] through stage-y romantic gestures, while Janelle and Alyssa’s friendship retains its sass. Readers will learn a lot of details about what kidneys do, what happens when they fail, and how the organ donation process works, making this ideal for budding med students and activists as well as fans of romance and relationship drama.
