Abstract

Aqueous expanded dispersions of an exemplary aromatic polyamide are rapidly dyed at room temperature. Sorption isotherms have been obtained for several basic dyes and for o–nitroaniline. ‘Overdyeing’ is observed at both pH extremes and at high ionic strength. The results are in qualitive agreement with the Donnan theory as generalised by McGregor and Harris. This work supports the view that the ‘difficulty’ in dyeing commercial Nomex Aramid is of kinetic origin.
