Abstract
Born in Scotland in 1900, Dr. Gilbert F. Cunningham was associated with his family's printing firm in Alva (Clackmannanshire). He received his Ph. D. from Edinburgh University with a thesis on the English translations of Dante's Divine Comedy. His own translations, from six different languages, are among the best ever done in English; one thinks in particular of his impressive Jean de Sponde, Poems of Love and Death (Edinburgh, 1964). His comparable version of G6ngora's Polifemo will be published by the Edinburgh University Press as the first volume in a new bilingual series.
