Abstract

JO N 2 88 9 The family history was unremarkable regarding neurological disorders. Transcranial sonography with bilateral approach (imaging depth of 15 cm) was performed using a Siemens Sonoline® Elegra system, equipped with a 2.5 MHz phased array transducer. Width of the third ventricle was measured on a standardized diencephalic axial plane. Echogenicity of the thalami, the substantia nigra, the lenticular nuclei and the heads of the caudate nuclei were investigated according to previously described examination protocol for extrapyramidal disorders [6]. An additional midbrain examination plane located caudal to the level of the substantiae nigrae was used (Fig. 1 b). Brain parenchyma sonography (BPS) showed a massive bilateral hyperechogenicity of pallidostriatal regions (Fig. 1 a) as well as of central midbrain structures (Fig. 1 b), while substatia nigra Christos Krogias Saskia Meves Martin Schoellhammer Ralf Gold Juergen Andrich
