Abstract
The clock references for SONET (synchronous optical network) and SDH (synchronous digital hierarchy) network synchronization and distribution of these reference signals in synchronous optical networks are addressed. These signals provide transport-equipment and office synchronization ensuring that overall network performance objectives are met. Synchronization quality levels found in the network as well as message set characteristics required by the synchronization rearrangement algorithm are discussed. A synchronization rearrangement algorithm is presented for linear and ring networks. The synchronization network is presented from a SONET viewpoint with comparisons to the SDH network. >
