Abstract

Responses before death to several acaricides by the two spotted spider mite, Tetranychus telarius (L.), and the southern two-spotted spider mite, T. cinnabarinus (Boisduval), are described. With organic phosphates, the speed of killing action is variable and is accompanied by body shrivelling. Aramite® (2-( p -tert-butylphenoxy)isopropyl 2-chloroethyl sulfite) causes spasms of violent kicking and body shrinkage. Dimite® (4,4'-dichloro- alpha -methylbcnzhydrol), Kelthane® (l, l-his( p -chlorophenyl)-2,2,2-triehloroethanol), and Eradex® (2,3-quinoxalinedithiol cyclic trithiocarbonate) exercise a slow killing action, but natural color and body forms are retained. Adult females killed slowly by Hooker HRS-16 (Pentac) (decachlorobi-2,4-cycolpentadien-1-yl) usually die with eggs partly extruded. Silica gel causes rapid shrivelling within 20 to 30 minutes.
