Abstract

This work covers the visible light transmission changes due to solar and high‐pressure mercury‐arc radiation for a soda‐lime glass when 0.15% of As2O3, CeO2, MnO2, and Sb2O3 are added. Each oxidizing agent exhibits characteristic color change after irradiation and Sb2O3 shows least color change. Effects of ultraviolet radiation on transmission in the infrared and ultraviolet are given. Differences in the depth of penetration of the color change for solar and arc radiation are pointed out. Replacement of Na2O or K2O by Li2O causes radical reduction in color change from mercury‐arc radiation. A Li2O ‐BeO‐SiO2 glass exhibits no color change when subjected to mercury‐arc radiation.
