Abstract
The behavior of selected solutes in 3-methylsydnone (e=144.0 at 40°C) was studied. Water is miscible with 3-methylsydnone in all proportions. The dielectric constants, viscosities, densities, and refractive indices of aqueous solutions of 3-methylsydnone have been determined at 40.0°C. A large dielectric decrement was observed, particularly at high 3-methylsydnone mole fraction; however, the excess volumes were found to be relatively small. Conductances were determined for four salts in pure 3-methylsydnone, also at 40°C. The conductance data, as analyzed by the Justice equation, indicated that 3-methylsydnone is a good ionizing medium. Use of tris(isopentyl)butylammonium tetraphenylborate as a reference electrolyte allowed estimation of limiting molar conductances of several ions. Bromide ions. Bromide ions are probably poorly solvated in 3-methylsydnone relative to sodium and potassium ions.
