Abstract

The main principles of interpretation of magneto-telluric sounding results, under a horizontal uniform layered medium, are given. Experimental curves c κ of the deep sounding, obtained in some parts of the U.S.S.R., coincide with each other qualitatively well. They testify to the presence of a thick series of great resistance in some hundreds of kilometers and, underlying it, a zone of the mantle of high conductivity. The presence of horizontal heterogeneities in the upper sedimentary series distorts the electrical field, which is observed on the surface. The quantitative interpretation of curves has to be carried out on account of this factor.
