Abstract

Summary Soil horizons are the results of pedological processes and classes of soil horizon descriptions are seen as fundamental to soil classification. The pedological (Fitz-Patrick) and the soil-physical (Bouma) approaches to soil horizon classes have close parallels and are useful in applications because of the added flexibility they bring. A fuzzy-sets approach to horizon classes is suggested to deal with the intergrading and multivariate nature of soil horizons.
